厳しい環境でニワトリの子育て
園内には野生化したニワトリが数多く生息しています。警戒心は非常に強くいつでも一定の距離を保ち決して私達に近づいたり、なつくことはありません。そのニワトリがギフトショップの裏にある枯葉から堆肥を作っている場所で卵を抱き、雛を孵そうとしています。

ある日、いつものようにニワトリのいる現場へ行ってみますと、座っているニワトリの回りから雛の泣き声が聞こえてきます。雛が孵った感動の一瞬です。近づくと鳴き声はピタと止み何事もなかったように親鳥だけが座っています。多くの外敵が雛を狙っており、雛が産まれた喜びを味わう暇も無く、これからが外敵の集中攻撃から身を守り逃れなくてはいけない戦争の始まりでもあります。雛は次の日にはもう巣から離れていきますが、ニワトリのいなくなった巣の中には卵の殻が６個あり、６羽の雛が孵ったことがわかります。勢いのある元気な泣き声を出し散歩をしている雛は直ぐに見つけることが出来ました。しかし母親に守られて歩いている雛は４羽しかいません。２羽は既に犠牲になったのでしよう。
親鳥が雛を連れ散歩している光景は和やかで平和な気持ちにさせてくれますが、毎日雛が減っていくのを見なくてはいけないのは辛いものです。園内では良く一羽の雛を連れて散歩している光景を見ますが、自分を犠牲にしてでも外敵から雛を守ってやれる限界が一羽ではないのかと思います。やがて今回も雛は１羽に減ってしまいましたが、日に日に大きく成長しています。大きくなっても母親の後を離れずについている光景は色々なことを語りかけてくれ、色々な想像にふけってしまいます。母親に守られ育つ雛の回りに男親の姿は一度も見えない。
